the longest trip home

I had the pleasure of meeting John Grogan a few years back at school in Mt. Pleasant. Being a CMU grad himself, he toured his college when his book Marley & Me was published. At the time, I was was taking a creative writing class, and my professor insisted we go see him speak. I am so glad we got to do that, because he’s even funnier in person! If you’ve read Marley & Me you’d know how effortless his sense of humor is. At the time, I hadn’t read it yet – but picked it up almost immediately after and couldn’t put it down. It’s just one of those books that will make you smile at the very thought of it. Who doesn’t love Marley?

The Longest Trip Home is no exception. A very admirable follow up to his first triumph. He paints such a colorful but realistic picture of growing up, I felt like I was a distant relative – reading a family memoir. While there are moments of heartache and sadness, the loads of humor throughout really send you sailing through his memories, stopping for a good laugh at each one.

Everyone can relate to wacko parents. Or the first time they got plastered. Or their first crush. It’s such an excellent mixture of humor, nostalgia, sadness, all wrapped into understanding. It really shows us that life is a journey, a very powerful promise anyone young or old can connect to. It’s a few years old already, but It’s really a must read! A must!
